The West Coast – The Place To Be To See The Super Blue Blood Moon

It’s time to set your alarms – for the first time in over 150 years, a ‘super blue blood moon’ will be visible from the United States! And NASA is saying that the West Coast, Hawaii and Alaska are the best places to see this super rare lunar trifecta (lucky us!).

So, what exactly is a ‘super blue blood moon’?

Its a combination of three different celestial events: a Supermoon, a blue moon and a total lunar eclipse.

And what do all of these events mean?

The Supermoon means that the moon will appear 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual. The blue moon, despite its alluring name, simply means that it’s the second full moon of the month. And the total eclipse is what is responsible for making the moon appear a reddish colour (hence the ‘blood moon’) and this element will only be visible across the western side of the States.

When will this event take place?

For you lucky Californians, this celestial treat starts with the lunar eclipse at 3:48am PCT and will end at 7:12am PCT on Wednesday Jan 31 2018, with the crazy color change thanks to the total lunar eclipse lasting from 4:51am PCT to 6:08am PCT. That gives you a great window of 77 minutes to witness this spectacular event (even if just for a minute or two before climbing back into bed for a few more minutes). It’ll be worth the early start though, we promise!

What if I want to make this event even more special?

We’ve listed a few cars that’ll transform your experience tomorrow morning (or any other time you feel like stargazing really):

The One With The Great View

Kia Optima EX 2018 From $25,700 MSRP

This midsize car is the perfect choice for those of you wanting the best of both worlds – comfort and visibility. The Kia Optima comes with the premium option of having a large two-paned panoramic roof meaning that when it gets a little hot in the car you can wind back part of the panoramic roof to let in some fresh air without hindering your view of the nights sky. Now, this premium option comes at a price of $2,300 but we think it’s worth every penny!

The One With The Ultimate Trunk

Honda Ridgeline 2018 From $29,630 MSRP

The new Ridgeline makes for the ultimate stargazing/moon gazing vehicle. Just grab some comfy cushions and warm blankets and cozy on up in the truck bed! This truck may be pricier than other trucks in its class, but it has some awesome techy extras that’ll make you understand the extra bucks – things like it’s in-bed power outlets and truck bed audio system will take your outdoor adventures to the next level. This combines the luxuries of the indoors with the wonderful benefits of being in the great outdoors.

The One With Extra Space

Subaru Outback 2018 From $25,895 MSRP

The Outback is a great all-rounder – it works for those city dwellers, for those who love the outdoors and everyone in between. Once you’ve driven up to a nice vantage point, you can fold down the rear seats and keep the trunk open which will act like the perfect portable tent – no fiddly tent pegs to deal with here! You can just sit back in the comfort of your own car and watch the skies and when you’re all done, no packing to do, just jump in to the front seats and you’re away. You can even store away cozy blankets and cushions in its underfloor storage. It’s that simple.

Hopefully we have inspired you enough to set your alarm clocks to see this spectacular sight! And for those of you who sadly will miss out, there are plenty of websites that will be streaming the event. Happy Moongazing everybody!

Is your car Christmas Roadtrip ready?

”Tis the season to spend time with family and friends. And for some of us, that means a nice long car journey. Whether you are going to be travelling up or down the coast or inland, some preparation is key – there’s nothing worse than breaking down on the highway knowing that it could’ve been prevented!

So here is some helpful advice for the long trip ahead:

1) See a mechanic before your trip – you’ll want to make sure you have no major issues that could ruin the ride.

2) If you’re not already a member, join an automobile association – you never know if/when you’ll need some roadside assistance.

3) If your car doesn’t have one, go and buy yourself a good quality satellite navigation system – that doesn’t mean that you should skip out on the old school maps, so keep one in the boot just in case!

4) Pack a roadside emergency kit including things like the car manual, first aid kit, phone charger etc. – if the worst was to happen, you want to make sure that you and your family are as comfortable as possible.

5) Clean your car inside and out – and maybe even buy a nice festive air freshener to get you all in the Christmas spirit.

6) Make space for luggage – with Christmas being the time for giving, you’ll have a little more luggage than usual with gifts for your nearest and dearest.

7) Make a Christmas playlist/Bring a Christmas CD – get everyone singing along to some Christmassy music to help pass some time.

8) Check your planned route before you leave for any last minute roadworks or road closes – the last thing you’ll want to do is to waste gas on finding a new way to your destination.

We hope these tips will help make your journey safer and more comfortable, and that you are all enjoying the festive season!

ACEEE’s Lean, Green, Driving Machines of 2017

ACEEE released its Greenest, Meanest, and Greener List For 2017 Vehicles

Do you happen to love new cars and the environment? Well, for those environmentally conscious drivers out there looking to make a difference, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) reveals what cars are the most eco-friendly as well as which are the worst. In addition, ACEEE has provided a list of greener choices because some of the greenest vehicles may not be practical for your given situation or region.

How the numbers work:

  • EDX – the lower the number the better
  • Green Score – the higher the number the better

EDX is the environmental damage index which estimates pollution from vehicle manufacturing, the production and distribution of fuel, and vehicle tailpipes.  The lower the number the better.

We’ve added the suggested MSRP next to each vehicle to get an idea of what each vehicle actually costs. MSRP is for the starting price on the base model.

Forbes points out that, according to Green Car Reports, more than half a million carbon-cutting hybrids, plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles were sold in the U.S. last year. Admittedly that’s only a small sliver of the 17.55 million new passenger cars and light trucks sold last year, but that number is expected to swell with additional electrified models coming to market with higher mpg ratings as a result of tightening fuel economy regulations.

With the line-up of greener vehicles in 2017 it’s likely that this year will bring a record number of sales in the greener category.

Now you can head over to PushAuto to check out these greener than green vehicles in a bit more detail – and maybe one of these eco-friendly cars could be sat on your driveway before you know it!

How To Survive a Long Car Journey Without Losing Your Mind

Traveling alone for hours on end can be boring and tiresome. So here’s some things you can do to make the journey a little less painful:

1) Create a playlist before you go

Music always makes a car ride more fun – it’s a great way to make time go by a lot faster too. Don’t forget to include a few of your guilty pleasures to sing along to.

2) Set a maximum number of hours that you will drive for during the day

Driving is tiring work and being on the road when your tired can be super dangerous!

3) Take little pit stops every hour or so

Think about it…you’re sat for hours on end. You and your body are going to hate that. So make sure you get out of the car, stretch your legs/back/arms/whatever else aches. You’ll feel better for it once the ride is over.

4) Wear comfy clothes and shoes

We are talking yoga pants, joggers, sneakers etc. Even if you are driving somewhere fancy, you wouldn’t want to be sat in your nice clothes the whole way there anyway! And maybe keep some body spray/deodorant on hand to freshen up along the way.

5) Bring some tasty snacks and plenty to drink

Hydration is key on any long journey! So bring lots of water and maybe a coffee to keep you alert. And you are bound to get hungry so bring along a cereal bar or two, a sandwich…whatever you like! Gas is expensive enough, let alone gas station food!

6) Open the windows every now and then

The fresh air will do you good and will help you feel more awake when tiredness kicks in.

7) Get a phone charger for the car

As you are by yourself, you never know when you’ll need help or when you’ll just want to hear a friendly voice. Plus, most people use their phones as a sat-nav and the last thing you need is for you having to guess the rest of your journey (or worse, using an actual map!)

8) Download an audiobook or podcast on something that interests you

If music isn’t your thing, an audiobook is a great alternative and an interesting podcast is a fun way to keep you feeling awake
